Fuel cost calculator for Canada

Pick a car and tell us how far you drive. We use the official Canadian fuel rating and your province's pump price to show what the car costs to fuel each month and each year. The numbers shown are an example, so change them to yours.

How it works

Natural Resources Canada publishes a fuel rating for every new car sold in Canada, in litres per 100 kilometres. We start from the combined figure, which mixes city and highway driving. A lower number means the car uses less fuel.

Litres a year is the rating divided by 100, times your kilometres. The cost is those litres times the price per litre. The price starts at the latest monthly average for your province from Statistics Canada, for the grade of fuel the car is rated on, because premium costs more than regular. Type your own price if the pumps near you differ.

The table at the bottom shows how the year changes if the pump price moves 10 or 20 cents either way. Prices swing more from month to month than a car's rating does, so it shows how much the answer can move.

Example: a 2023 Toyota RAV4 in Ontario

The RAV4 is rated at 7.9 litres per 100 km. Driven 15,000 km a year, it burns 1,185 litres. At 169.1 cents a litre, the August 2026 average for Ontario's surveyed cities, that is $2,003.84 a year, or $166.99 a month. Over five years it is $10,019.20. If the price rose 20 cents a litre, the year would cost $2,240.84.

What this does not cover

  • The official rating is a lab figure meant for comparing cars. What you spend depends on how you drive, the weather, the load and any trailer.
  • Ratings for 2010 to 2014 models are adjusted estimates published by Natural Resources Canada, not test results. Newer ones are tested values.
  • It covers cars that burn gasoline or diesel, including ordinary hybrids. For an electric car, use the electric versus gas calculator. Plug-in hybrids are left out because their cost depends on how often they are charged.
  • Pump prices are monthly averages for the surveyed cities in your province, not your street. They arrive a month or two after the month they describe.
  • It counts fuel only. Insurance, maintenance, tires and depreciation are not included.

Common questions

How much does it cost to fuel a car in Canada each month?

It depends on the car, how far you drive and the pump price. For a 2023 Toyota RAV4 driven 15,000 km a year in Ontario, about $167 a month. Pick your own car and kilometres above to see yours.

What is a good fuel consumption rating?

Lower is better, but only compare cars of the same kind. A compact car and a full-size pickup are not comparable, and hybrids usually look best in city driving. Use the version list to compare engines and transmissions of the same model.

Do I have to use premium gasoline?

Check the owner's manual. Some cars require premium and some only recommend it. The calculator prices the car on the grade its official rating was measured with, and you can type a different pump price if you buy another grade.

How do I work out how many kilometres I drive in a year?

Subtract an older odometer reading, from a service receipt or inspection, from today's, and scale it to twelve months. Or open the commute option above and enter your trip to work, the days a week and your other driving.

Why does my real fuel use differ from the rating?

The rating comes from standard lab tests. Cold weather, short trips, fast driving, a roof rack, tire pressure and heavy loads all raise real fuel use. Use the rating to compare cars with each other, and expect your own figure to be a little different.
