True cost of owning a used car

What does owning this car really cost? Pick a model and year, how long you will keep it and how you will pay for it. You get the value it loses, the interest, the fuel and any yearly costs you add, as a total and per month, beyond the sale price you get back.

How it works

The value lost is the car's typical price today, less what a car of the same model that many years older is listed for today. That older car is the best guide we have to what yours will be worth then, and it uses real listings rather than a guess.

Interest is what you pay on the loan while you keep the car, worked out from your down payment, rate and term. Fuel uses the official fuel rating, your kilometres and your province's latest pump price from Statistics Canada.

Insurance, maintenance, tires and registration are left out unless you enter a yearly figure, because they depend on you and your province. Your privacy comes first. What you enter stays on your device unless you choose to text it to Uobo.

What this does not cover

  • The value at the end is not a forecast. It is what older model years of this car are listed for today, so a sudden change in the market would change it.
  • Insurance and upkeep are not included unless you enter them, and they are real costs. Get an insurance quote for the exact car.
  • Electric cars show no fuel cost here, because charging depends on your electricity price. Use the electric vs gas calculator for those.
  • Prices are asking prices, not what the car would sell for.

Common questions

What does it cost to own a used car?

The biggest costs are usually the value the car loses and the interest on the loan, followed by fuel, insurance and maintenance. This tool counts the first three from real data and lets you add the rest.

How is the value I get back worked out?

From what older model years of the same car are listed for today. A car that is three years older than yours now is a good picture of what yours will be in three years.

Is a cheaper car always cheaper to own?

No. A cheaper car can lose less value but cost more in fuel or repairs, and a more expensive one can lose value slowly. Compare the total per month, not the price.

Why are insurance and maintenance not included?

They vary a lot with the driver, the province and the car, so a made-up average would mislead. Enter your own figure and the tool adds it.

Where do the prices come from?

From cars listed for sale in Canada, counted by price and refreshed every month. The page shows which month they are from.
