How it works
Each month we count how many cars of every model and model year are listed for sale in Canada at each price, and find the typical asking price for each year. Putting the years side by side shows the drop as cars get older.
Because it compares the model years that are for sale today, it shows what each age costs now. It is a good guide to how value falls with age, but not a forecast for one particular car.
Your privacy comes first. What you enter stays on your device unless you choose to text it to Uobo.
What this does not cover
- These are asking prices, not sale prices or trade-in values. Dealers pay less than they ask.
- Trim, options, condition and kilometres differ between model years, and so do the cars themselves, so the curve also reflects changes between model years.
- Very new models, rare models and models with few listings may not have enough in each year to show a curve.
Common questions
How fast do cars depreciate?
A common rule of thumb is that a new car loses about a fifth of its value in the first year and roughly half within five, but it varies a lot by model. The tool shows the figures for the model you pick.
Which cars hold their value best?
Models in steady demand with a reputation for reliability tend to lose value more slowly. Pick a few you are considering and compare how much each loses by the same age.
Is a new or a nearly new car better value?
A nearly new car has already taken the steepest part of the drop, which is why many buyers look at one to three years old. The new vs used tool shows the difference in price for your model.
Does this tell me what my car is worth?
Not exactly. It shows the asking prices of cars for sale at each age. To see what cars like yours are listed for, use the what is my car worth tool.
Where do the prices come from?
From cars listed for sale in Canada, counted by price and refreshed every month. The page shows how many listings it compared and which month they are from.
