How it works
We add the taxed dealer fees to the car's price, take off your trade-in, and charge your province's sales tax on what is left. Then we add fees that are not taxed, such as licensing and registration.
Advertised prices may not include every fee and tax. Comparing out-the-door totals is the clearest way to compare two offers, because it puts every line on the same footing.
Example: British Columbia
A $42,000 car with $1,200 of taxed dealer fees and $200 of licensing has $43,200 to tax. GST is $2,160 and BC PST at 7% is $3,024, so the out-the-door price is $48,584.
What this does not cover
- It covers a purchase from a dealer, not a private sale or a lease.
- It does not include rebates, incentives, optional extras or the cost of financing. Use the car payment calculator for the loan.
- It covers every province and territory except Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
Common questions
What is the out-the-door price?
It is the total you pay to take the car home: the vehicle price, dealer fees, sales tax, and licensing or registration, less your trade-in. It is usually higher than the advertised price.
Is tax charged before or after the trade-in comes off?
After. A dealer charges tax on the price minus your trade-in, so a trade-in lowers both what you owe and the tax on it.
Which dealer fees are taxed?
Charges such as documentation, freight, delivery and tire levies are generally taxed with the car, while government licensing and registration fees are not. Our dealer fees guide goes through each one.
Why is the PST higher on some British Columbia cars?
BC's PST rises in steps on dearer vehicles, from 7% up to 20%, based on the price before the trade-in. Electric vehicles reach the first step at a higher price until February 2027.
